One Fine Day... (from Our Curator)

‘Where do I get my ideas? From being alive! Designers should be aware of the world around them’ - Lucienne Day, 1994

This year marks the centenary of the birth of 20th-century textile designer Lucienne Day.

As a huge fan of her work, I thought it important to share some news about exciting things happening to commemorate this important year - of particular interest to anyone also excited by her work and the iconic designs that continue to inspire artists today.

The pattern that I’ve chosen here is ‘Calyx’ because it’s the pattern that got her noticed at the 1951 Festival of Britain. This was a true watershed in her career; a current in what she called the ‘tremendous surge of vitality’ that followed the Second World War.  This design was her abstract interpretation of poppy seed heads and mushroom tops. She went on to win a gold medal for the fabric at the Milan Triennale and the international design award of the American Institute of Directors – the first British designer to win this accolade.

Alongside many exhibitions throughout the country, the first ‘Lucienne Day: Living Design’ is at The Gallery of Arts University Bournemouth until 22nd March (

A selection of Lucienne Day at Classic Textiles fabrics will be exclusively at John Lewis from early in 2017. (Cushions are already available).  In 2003 Lucienne Day collaborated with Glasgow School of Art on digital reprints of twelve of her historic textile designs in multiple original colourways and in 2006 Lucienne Day collaborated on reissues of four of her classic tea towel designs.  And the Lucienne Day 100 Designs poster, designed by Studio Fernando Gutiérrez to tell the story of Lucienne Day's career and to showcase archive images of 100 of Lucienne Day's designs, many previously unpublished, is now available too.  Details of where you can purchase all of these wonderful things are on the Robin and Lucienne Day website (, along with news and competitions and much more. Definitely worth a visit.
